1、What Do Dreams Tell Us?
Why do we dream? Do dreams have meanings? These are questions which have troubled man for thousands of years. The oldest surviving book on the interpretation of dreams is Egyptian and is nearly 4,000 years old. In ancient Greece, it was thought that people who were ill could be cured by telling their dreams. They would relate their dreams to their doctors who would tell them what they meant and then give them medicine to make them well. The ancient Chinese believed that if a pregnant woman dreamed of a bear, she would have a son, and if she dreamed of a snake, she would have a daughter. There are many stories about dreams foretelling (預言) the future.
We certainly do not now believe that dreams foretell the future. Most scientists believe that dreams are based on events in our own life and on our feelings. The events are usually very recent, mostly within the last two days. Our emotions, on the other hand our wishes, hopes and fears may go back many years, even to early childhood.
In a dream, events are altered. A dream may contain parts of many real-life events. Most importantly, something that cannot be shown directly may be shown indirectly. For example, you might dream of driving a large car. This could mean not that you want to have a larger car, but that you desire power, and maybe you want to control other people. Again, you may dream that you are an actor in a play. The play is about to start, but you have completely forgot your lines. This dream may seem strange because you are not interested in acting, and you never want to be in a play. But the dream may mean that you have some other problem that you feel is too difficult for you to solve.
Psychologists believe that dreams may be helpful to us. Indeed, people who have been allowed to sleep in experiments, but not allowed to dream, have become anxious and restless. And when they are later allowed to sleep as much as they like, they dream more than ever to make us for the lost "dream time".
If you dream of driving a large car, it could mean that you want ______.
【單選題】
A.power
B.quiet and happy
C.events
D.experiments
E.diseases
F.worried and nervous
正確答案:A
答案解析:根據(jù)題干線索詞driving a car定位原文至第三段第四句:For example, you might dream of driving a large car. This could mean not that you want to have a larger car, but that you desire power...句中的this即指dream of driving a car, desire作為動詞與want同義。由此推斷,句中畫線部分即為所需添加成分,而A選項屬于原文復現(xiàn),故A為正確答案。
1、Keeping Cut Flowers
1 While everybody enjoys fresh cut flowers around his house, few people know how to keep them for as long as possible. This may be done by keeping in mind a few simple fact.
2 An important thing to remember about cut flowers is that they are sensitive to temperature. For example, studies have shown that cut carnations (康乃馨) retain their freshness eight times longer when kept at 12℃ than when kept at 26℃. Keeping freshly harvested flowers at the right temperatures is probably the most important aspect of flower care.
3 Flowers are not intended by nature to live very long. Their biological purpose is simply to attract birds or insects, such as bees, for pollination (粉). After that, they quickly dry up and die. The process by which flowers consume oxygen and produce carbon dioxide, called respiration, generates the energy the flower needs to give the flower its shape and color. The making of seeds also depends on this energy. While all giving things respire, flowers have a high level of respiration. A result of all this respiration is heat, and for flowers the level of heat relative to the mass of the flower is very high. Respiration also brings about the eventual death of the flower. Thus the greater the level of respiration, the sooner the flower dies.
4 How, then, to control the rate at which flowers die? By controlling respiration. How is respiration controlled? By controlling temperature. We know that respiration produces heat, but the reverse is also true. Thus by maintaining low temperatures, respiration is reduced and the cut flower will age more slowly.
5 Another vital factor in keeping cut flowers is the quality of the water in which they are placed. Flowers find it difficult to "drink" water that is dirty or otherwise polluted. Even when water looks and smells clean, it almost certainly contains harmful substances that can endanger the flowers. To rid the water of these unwanted substances, household chlorine bleach (含氯漂白劑) can be used in small quantities. It is recommended that 15 drops of chlorine bleach (at 4% solution) be added to each liter of water. The water and solution should also be replaced each day.
Paragraph 2____
【單選題】
A.Control of Respiration
B.Beauty of Fresh Cut Flowers
C.Role of Respiration
D.Most Important Aspect of Flower Care
E.Need for Clean Water
F.Ways of Stopping Respiration
正確答案:D
答案解析:本段第1句和最后一句都是該段的主題句,但是最后一句是此題的答案,選項D幾乎是最后一句的原句重現(xiàn),故選D。
1、Science Fiction
1 Amongst the most popular books being written today are those that are usually classified as
science fiction. Hundreds of titles are published every year and are read by all kinds of people.
Furthermore, some of the most successful films of recent years have been based on science fiction stories.
2 It is often thought that science fiction is a fairly new development in literature, but its ancestors can be found in books written hundreds of years ago. These books were often concerned with the presentation of some forms of ideal society, a theme that is still often found in modern stories.
3 Most of the classics of science fiction, however, have been written within the last hundred years. Books by writers such as Jules Verve and H. G Wells, to mention just two well known authors, have been translated into many languages.
4 Modern science fiction writers don't write about men from Mars or space adventure stories. They are more interested in predicting the results of technical developments on society and the human mind; or in imagining future worlds that are a reflection of the world that we live in now. Because of this their writing has obvious political undertones (涵義).
5 In an age where science fact frequently overtakes (超過) science fiction, the writers may find it difficult to keep ahead of scientific advances. Those who are sufficiently clear-sighted to see the way we are going, however, may provide a valuable lesson on how to deal with the problems which society will inevitably face as it tries to master its new technology.
Some form of ideal society is____.
【單選題】
A.concerned with the problems that we will have to solve in the future
B.reading books of science fiction
C.political implication
D.a recurrent theme
E.read worldwide
F.translated into many languages
正確答案:D
答案解析:本題答案的依據(jù)是在第2段最后一句,句中的theme指該句的前半部分,而atheme that is still often found in modern stories這句話換一種說法就成了a recurrent theme(一個反復出現(xiàn)的主題),故選D。
1、A Star Is Born
1 The VLT (Very Large Telescope) is the world's largest telescope and is taking astronomers further back to the Big Bang than they ever thought possible. Located 2,600 meters up to the Chilean Andes, it has four huge mirrors, each about the size of a London bus. The VLT is so powerful it can spot a burning match 10, 000 kilometers away.
2 This astonishing power will allow astronomers to see events in space from the birth of stars to the collision of galaxies on the edge of the cosmos. The VLT is giving astronomers their best ever view of the cosmos. The power of the VLT to see the smallest detail at the furthest distances makes its designers amazed.
3 Take the case of Eta Carinae, one of the most explosive stars in the universe. This star produces ultraviolet laser rays (紫外線) and it will destroy itself in a few million years' time. It is five times brighter than the sun and when it explodes it is going to be a sight worth waiting for.
4 But it is at distances of millions, even billions, of light years that the VLT really shows its power. The VLT can detect light that set out on its journey before the earth even existed. This gives astronomers their first ever detailed views of events that took place in the earliest days of the cosmos.
5 In other words, the VLT is a kind of a time machine. It takes astronomers back to a time when complete galaxies crashed into each other. The effects of these past collisions can now be seen by scientists, and astronomers believe the telescope will reveal more about these exciting events in the years to come. One day, we might be able to say we have traveled back to the beginning of time, and we will have a much clearer picture of how our planet was born.
The VLT will allow scientists to see events____.
【單選題】
A.its detecting power
B.millions of light years away in space
C.the location of the VLT
D.as an example
E.the birth of the earth
F.the rotation of the earth
正確答案:B
答案解析:文章第2段最后一句提到了這句話的意思。
1、The Hurricane
1. A hurricane (颶風) is a tropical storm with winds that have reached a constant speed of 74 miles per hour. Hurricane winds blow in a large spiral(螺旋) around a relative calm center known as the "eye". The "eye" is generally 20 to 30 miles wide, and the storm may extend outward 400 miles. As a hurricane nears land, it can bring heavy rains, high winds and storm surges(風暴潮). The storm surges and heavy rains can lead to flooding.
2. Hurricanes are given a different label, depending on where they occur. If they begin over the North Atlantic Ocean, the Caribbean Sea, The Gulf of Mexico, or the Northeast Pacific Ocean, they are called hurricanes. Similar storms that occur in the Northwest Pacific Ocean west of the Internaional Date Line are called typhoons near Australia and in the Indian Ocean, they are referred to as tropical cyclones(龍卷風).
3. When a hurricane hits land, it can do great damage through its fierce winds, heavy rains, inland(內陸的) flooding and huge waves crashing on to the shore. During a hurricane, homes, businesses and public buildings may be damaged or destroyed, roads and bridges can be washed away. A powerful hurricane can kill more people and destroy more property than any other natural disaster. Fishermen are at special risk from hurricanes as they may be at sea when a hurricane arrives and not be able to get to a safe harbor if they do not receive adequate warning.
4. If a hurricane is comming in your area, the most important thing is to stay calm and find shelter immediately. Go to your safe room. If you do not have one, stay indoors during the hurricane and go to a safer place near the center of your home. Cover yourself with a blanket and be sure to keep away from windows and glass doors, because if the glass breaks it’s really dangerous. Do not be fooled if there is lull(暫停), it could be the eye of the storm—winds will pick up again.
Paragraph 2 ______
【單選題】
A.Where do hurricanes usually happen?
B.What damages can a hurricane cause?
C.What should you do during a hurricane?
D.What is a hurricane?
E.What are different names of hurricanes?
F.How do you know a hurricane is coming?
正確答案:E
