A.abandoned
B.lost
C.took
D.created

2、Pronouncing a Language
Pronouncing a language is a skill. Every normal person is an expert in the skill of pronouncing his own language; but few people are even fairly proficient at pronouncing foreign languages. Now there are many reasons for this, some obvious, some perhaps not so obvious. But I suggest that the basic reason why people in general do not speak foreign languages very much better than they do native language is that they fail to understand the true nature of the problem of learning to pronounce. Far too many people fail to realize that pronouncing a foreign language is a skill----one that needs careful training of a special kind, and one that cannot be gained by just leaving it to take care of itself. I think even teachers of language, while realizing the importance of a good accent, often neglect, in their practical teaching, the branch of study concerned with speaking the language. So the first point I want to make is that English pronunciation must be taught; the teacher should be prepared to devote some of the lesson time to this, and get the student to feel that here is a matter worthy of receiving his close attention. So, there should be occasions when other aspects of English, such as grammar or spelling, are allowed for the moment to take second place.
Besides this question of the time given to pronunciation, there are two other requirements for the teacher: the first, knowledge; the second, technique.
It is also possible to get a clear mental picture of the relationship between the sounds of different languages, between the speech habits of English people and those, say, of your students. Unless the teacher has such a picture, any comments he may make on his students' pronunciation are unlikely to be of much use, and lesson time spent on pronunciation may well be time wasted.
What are the three important requirements for teachers in teaching?【單選題】
A.Attention, information, technique.
B.Time, knowledge, attention.
C.Time, knowledge, technique.
D.Information, technique, a clear mental picture.

A.Because
B.Where
C.Although
D.Whatever
5、Why People Use Pseudonyms (假名字)?
You can't choose the name you are given at birth, but in many countries you can change it legally when you reach adulthood. Of course, most people never change their names even if they feel unhappy about them. However some people do take this course of action-particularly artists! What makes an artist want to change their name? Sometimes it's for purely personal reasons, such as the Nobel Prize winning poet from Chile, Neftalf Reyes. He didn't want his father to know he was writing poetry, so he changed his name to Pablo Neruda when he was a young man. At other times the reason may appear strange, take the case of the Portuguese poet Femando Pessoa, who wrote under 75 different names. The reason? "When I use a different name, I always write in a different way," he explained. In most cases, however , people change their names for social, historical, political, or cultural reasons. Here are some of the most common: reason. The person's real name is just too long and difficult to remember. Let's be honest, Madonna Louise Ciccone is not as easy to remember as just plain Madonna. And short names are much easier to remember: William Bradley became Brad Pitt and Edson Arantes do Nascimento became Pele.
Sometimes names are changed for marketing purposes. For example, if a name sounds too foreign, it may be changed to something that is more recognizable in a market. So in the film world, Ramon Estsvez adopted the name Martin Sheen. Or maybe the artist's real name doesn't sound attractive-Chad Everett does sound a lot better than Raymond Cramton.
Artists sometimes choose the name of someone they admire. Robert Zimmerman changed his name to Boo Dylan because of his admiration for the Welsh poet, Dylan Thomas.
Another reason may be practical: in the past, women found it very difficult to get published. To ____ this situation, they sometimes gave themselves men's names, so the English author Mary Ann Evans became George Eliot, and she did get her books published!
【單選題】
A.admit
B.avoid
C.assure
D.affect
正確答案:B
答案解析:本題難度不大,根據(jù)文中句意,此處要選擇“避免”的意思,所以最佳答案是B。
6、Houses of the Future
What will houses be like after thirty years? No one really knows, but architects are trying to predict. What will our home be like then?
Future houses will have to be flexible. some of us will be working from home. So we will have to be able to use areas of the house for work for part of the day and for living for the rest. Families grow and change with children arriving, growing up and leaving home. The house of the future will have to grow and change with the family. Nothing will be as fixed as it is now. The house will always be changing to meet changing needs.
Everyone agrees that after 30 years we will be living in "intelligent" houses. We will be able to talk to our kitchen machines and discuss with them what to do. Like this: "We'll be having a party this weekend. What food shall we cook?" And the machine will tell us what food we will have to buy and how to cook it. We will be able to leave cooking to the machines, just tasting things from time to time to check.
The house of the future will be personal and each house will be different. You will be able to change the color of the wall easily. You won't have to paint them and you'll be able to tell the wall to change the color! And if you don't like the color today, you will be able to have a new one. ____
【單選題】
A.You will be able to change the color of the wall easily.
B.The only thing you won't be able to do is move the house somewhere else!
C.And the machine will tell us what food we will have to buy and how to cook it.
D.What will our home be like then?
E.The house of the future will have to grow and change with the family.
F.The kids might take their bedrooms with them as they leave.
7、Some Unusual Celebrations
Some holidays are well - known all around the world. Among them are New Year's Eve Celebrations. Also days are common in honor of love and friendship, like Valentine's Day. Each country has its own special holidays too, to mark important events in its history. Schools, banks, and government offices all close on days like these. ____ A few of them are really very strange.
Of course, they are not strange to the people who celebrate them. Perhaps that is because the celebrations have long traditions. Consider April Fool's Day, for example. No one knows when or why it began. Today it is celebrated in many countries-France, England, and Australia, etc. On this day, people play practical jokes. Jokes are supposed to be funny, but these jokes do not make everyone laugh. The ones who laugh are the ones playing the jokes. The people they fool often get angry. Does celebrating this day make sense to you?
Dyngus Day in Poland seems strange, too. On this day, it is traditional for boys to pour water over the heads of girls. Here is the strangest part: they do it to girls they like.
Other unusual celebrations take place in a single city or town. A holiday called La Tomatina is celebrated in Bunol, Spain. Every year, in late August, big trucks carry more than 200,000 pounds of tomatoes into this little town. Then begins the world's biggest food fight. For two hours, people in the streets throw tomatoes at each other. Everyone ends up red from head to toe.
August 10 marks the start of the Puck Fair, an Irish festival with a very unusual tradition. People from the town of Killorglin go up into the mountains and catch a wild goat. They bring him back to town, put a crown on his head, and make him king for three days.
There are also some celebrations that are really strange. In the United States, sometimes one person gets an idea for a new holiday and tries to get others to accept it. Whose idea was Public Sleeping Day? That one is on February 28. It may seem strange, but it sounds like more fun than the one on February 9. That is supposed to be Toothache Day.
Do you like the idea of inventing a new holiday? If you do, then you will want to mark March 26 on your calendar. That is Make Up Your Own Holiday Day.
【單選題】
A.They bring him back to town, put a crown on his head, and make him king for three days.
B.Some of the days people celebrate, however, are less serious.
C.That is supposed to be Toothache Day.
D.Then begins the world's biggest food fight.
E.Some people have fun imagining new holidays.
F.Jokes are supposed to be funny, but these jokes do not make everyone laugh.
正確答案:B
答案解析:本題有一定難度,但因為各個選項差異較大,還是比較容易確定答案,可采用代人法,可以發(fā)現(xiàn)B代入原文中,最符合上下文邏輯,是答案。

10、Shopping at Second - hand Clothing Stores
When 33 years old Pete Barth was in college, shopping at second - hand clothing stores was just something he did-"like changing the tires on his car." He looked at his budget and decided he could save a lot of money by shopping for clothes at thrift shops.
"Even new clothes are fairly disposable (用后即丟掉的) and wear out after a couple of years," Barth said. "In thrift shops, you can find some great stuff whose quality is better than new clothes."
Since then, Barth, who works at a Goodwill thrift shop in the US state of Florida, has found that there are all kinds of reasons for shopping for second - hand clothing. Some people, like him, shop to save money. Some shop for a crazy - looking shirt. And some shop as a means of conserving energy and helping the environment.
Pat Akins, an accountant at a Florida Salvation Army (SA) (救世軍) thrift shop, said that, for her, shopping at thrift shops is a way to help the environment.
"When my daughter was little, we looked at it as recycling," Akins said: "Also, why pay 30 dollars for a new coat when you can get another one for a lot less?"
Akins said that the SA has shops all over the US-"some as big as department stores". All of the clothes are donated (捐贈), and when they have a surplus (盈余), they'll have "stuff a bag" specials, where customers can fill a grocery sack with clothes for only 5 or 10 dollars.
Julia Stocum, 22, points out, however, that the huge amount of second - hand clothing in the US is the result of American wastefulness.
"I'd say that second - hand stores are the result of our wasteful, materialistic culture," said Slocum, who works for a pro - conservation organization, the center of a New American Dream. "Thrift shops prevent waste from going to landfills (垃圾填埋場), They give clothing a second life and provide cheaper clothing for those who can't afford to buy new ones and generate (創(chuàng)造) income for charities. They also provide a way for the wealthy and middle classes to shed (擺脫) the guilt for their level of consumption."
When Barth was a college student, he often shopped at thrift shops ____【單選題】
A.to save money.
B.to save energy,
C.to help the environment.
D.to make friends with poor people.
